A late-First World War German single-seat fighter whose handling, climb performance, and high-altitude controllability made it one of the conflict’s most highly regarded fighter designs.
Development
The D.VII emerged from the German fighter competition at Adlershof in early 1918. Fokker’s V.11 prototype was modified after pilot feedback, including from Manfred von Richthofen, and the revised design was selected for production. To increase output, production extended beyond Fokker to Albatros-associated factories.
Operational History
Fokker D.VIIs reached front-line units in the spring of 1918 and quickly gained a reputation for strong climb performance, forgiving handling, and control near the upper end of their performance envelope. The exact service-entry month is intentionally flagged as disputed in the prototype data because institutional sources describe April front-line arrival and May combat appearance.
Variants
The prototype distinguishes the common Mercedes-powered D.VII from the BMW IIIa-powered D.VIIF because the engine change materially affected speed and ceiling. Factory-specific Fokker, Albatros, and OAW production differences remain to be expanded during full population.
