The A-10 is a purpose-designed close-air-support aircraft built around survivability, long loiter and the 30 mm GAU-8/A cannon, with later A-10C modernization adding precision and digital capabilities.
Development
Fairchild Republic developed the A-10 specifically for close air support. The YA-10A first flew on 10 May 1972, and the production aircraft entered operational units in 1976. The design emphasized survivability, low-altitude handling and the ability to deliver heavy direct fire against battlefield targets.
Design and Mission
The A-10 combines twin high-mounted turbofans, a heavily protected cockpit and systems, long loiter characteristics and the GAU-8/A 30 mm cannon. The A-10C upgrade adds digital precision-engagement capabilities while preserving the same core airframe family.
Variants
The prototype set models the YA-10A, production A-10A and upgraded A-10C. The A-10C reached initial operational capability in September 2007, demonstrating how a major modernization can remain a variant/upgrade record rather than forcing a new family.
