The AH-64 Apache is a two-seat, twin-engine attack-helicopter family developed for armed reconnaissance and attack missions and progressively modernized through A, D and E configurations.
Development
The YAH-64 prototype first flew in 1975. The production AH-64A entered the Army inventory in the 1980s, followed by major D and E model modernization. This family is the Phase 1 rotorcraft stress test because dimensions, crew layout, mission roles and propulsion differ structurally from fixed-wing records.
Design and Mission System
Apache variants use a tandem two-person cockpit, twin turboshaft engines, a four-blade main rotor, a 30 mm chain gun and combinations of rockets and guided missiles. The E model integrates stronger powertrain and network/sensor improvements while retaining the core attack-helicopter family identity.
Variants
Phase 1B represents the YAH-64 prototype, AH-64A, AH-64D Longbow and AH-64E Guardian. This is enough to prove the family/upgrade model while leaving export and license-built national derivatives for later controlled population.
